Doubling up your Niagara Winery Tour with Magic Winery Bus

Author: Don Fraser

The concept is immediately enticing. Take a classic British Double-Decker bus and invite guests to a high-up, wine-and-food sojourn in a picturesque destination.

Twelve years ago, David Hovell, along with winery owners Hanspeter Stutz and Pete Luckett, collaborated on this innovative way to promote travel to Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley wine region.

It includes transportation, in a classic British Double-Decker Bus, that offers breathtaking views and cool stops. Niagara was next in their sights.

“We’ve brought a new experience to this region — to visit this beautiful area, in an all-inclusive and affordable way,” said Hovell, operating partner of Magic Winery Bus tours.

“Along their journey, our guests will enjoy benefits from our winery partnerships in Niagara. It’s an educational, fun and entertaining wine experience.”

After an earlier launch in 2018, the team is restarting Magic Winery Bus tours in Niagara starting July, following a two-year hiatus due to Covid lockdowns. The trips continue until the end of September.

The approximately five-hour midday-afternoon circuits include a knowledgeable guide who curates the Double-Decker journey, with visits to acclaimed wineries, exclusive wine tastings and culinary offerings where available. Two tours are provided in the region — one in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and the other in Jordan’s Twenty Valley.

Tours range from $95 to $150, with NOTL award-winning wineries and estates that include Trius Winery, Wayne Gretzky Estates, Bella Terra Vineyards (PondView Estates), Pillitteri Estates Winery and Lakeview Wine Co.

The Twenty Valley stops are Sue-Ann Staff Estate Winery, Flat Rock Cellars and Creekside Estate Winery.

“We are not a traditional tour business,” Hovell said. “Our business owners are also winery owners, who understand the importance of creating authentic connections for guests and experiencing wineries in an engaging way.”

Guests are welcome to wear a mask when checking in, on board and at the wineries. Storage on the bus is also available for bulk purchases reminiscent of a wonderful experience in Niagara Wine Country.
